Breathing is so important yet it is one of the most overlooked things. If you are not breathing properly then you are not doing your exercises properly. When you take in air, you have to make sure that the stomach area and ribs expand.
Avoid lifting and raising your chest because these block the amount of air that you breathe in. Make sure that your head, neck and torso are aligned. Do not slouch because this obstructs the air that you can intake and keeps your diaphragm from descending. Decent posture is a must.
It is important that your exercises connect your singing to your breathing. Start with the five-finger exercise that can be demonstrated by blowing out five candles. Another one is the panting exercise. This trains you to breathe from your diaphragm. The last one is called the tongue trail. It can be done by extended rolling of the “Rs”.
The nasal tone that is produced comes from the soft palate. It is found at the back of the roof of your mouth (which is the hard palate). The sound produced is the same as the sound you make when you are yawning. When you yawn, your soft palate raises up, opening up your throat while your larynx lowers. When singing, you want your throat nice and wide and your larynx should be steady.
When it’s down, it produces an N-G sound. This blocks the air coming out of your mouth. This is the reason why all the air comes out of your nose and a nasal tone is produced. When the back or the front of your tongue raises you want to get it back behind the teeth. There will still be air coming out of your nose but you want it to primarily come out of your mouth.
Your sinus or nasal cavity serves as a secondary resonator. When the air is mostly coming out of your nose, nasal sound is produced. There are exercises that give you an idea of what it feels to raise and lower your soft palate. Plug your nose and try to make an “eeeh” sound.
However, you do not want to raise your soft palate too high or too low. When your tone sounds nasal, chances are it is too low and you need to raise it slightly. There are also exercises that loosen up the sinuses. By saying the word “nare” repeatedly, you produce a brassy sound that helps you get into your higher range.
